Metabolomics and proteomics allow deep insights into the chemistry and physiology of biological systems. On the BC Robert Winkler was born in Budapest and graduated from high school. He was drafted into forced labor in 1944. After the war he entered the technical university of Budapest and graduated in structural engineering. He immigrated to the US in 1957 after the Hungarian Revolution and had a productive career in civil engineering. He has been married to Jolan Winkler for 37 years and lives in Riverdale, New York. This book tells the story of a young Hungarian Jewish man drafted into forced labor and his numerous escape attempts. The "escape artist" vividly describes the tricks he used to fool the Hungarian and the Germans who inadvertently shielded him from Hungarian captors.

Nitrogruppen finden sich in verschiedenen Naturstoffen mit biologischer Aktivitat. Deren Biosynthese kann auf unterschiedlichen Routen stattfinden, wobei die Oxidation von Aminogruppen die wichtigste darstellt. Im Biosynthese-Gencluster fur Aureothin, einer Verbindung mit zytotoxischer, insektizider und antifungaler Aktivitat aus dem Aktinomyzeten Streptomyces thioluteus, wurde eine neuartige N-Oxygenase, AurF, entdeckt. Die funktionelle und strukturelle Charakterisierung dieses Enzyms fuhrte zu neuen Erkentnissen uber die biologische Nitrogruppenbildung. Es wurde gezeigt, dass die N-Oxygenierung von Aminogruppen schrittweise uber Hydroxylamin- und Nitrosointermediate ablauft. Die rekombinante Produktion von AurF ermoglichte eine sorgfaltige biochemische Charakterisierung. Rontgenkristallstrukturen ergaben dabei einen neuartigen binuklearen Mangan-Cluster im aktiven Zentrum des Enzyms. Zudem wird gezeigt, wie die streng regio- und chemoselektive Reaktion fur die Biokatalyse genutzt werden kann."
